Diversity Day

On the last Monday of term we held a fantastic Diversity Day in school. The children and adults had a fantastic time and created some amazing outcomes in their workshops. Mrs Hornsby was the driving force behind the special day and she has shared her comments on how it went below! We intend to make this a yearly event for the children!

Mrs Hornsby:
On Monday I was very fortunate to spend the day at school joining in with the Cultural Diversity event. It was a fun packed day full of activities and the children seemed to really enjoy it.

We learned that it is ok to be different and that we are all unique in our own way. At the same time we learned that even when people look different to us on the outside because they have different skin colour, language, culture and beliefs, they are still the same on the inside often holding the same hopes and dreams as us.

The children had the rare opportunity to meet a lady who was a school girl during the second world war and she told us about how different school life was then and we discussed how Great Britain has changed over the decades.

We also had the chance to produce some art work using techniques that originate from Aboriginal culture.

My highlight of the day was learning how to do “the light bulb” in Mrs Smith’s Bollywood Dance class! Also learning the meaning behind the different handshapes…fascinating. If you’ve never done Indian dance I can thoroughly recommend it!

I think it is really great that the school embraced the idea of the event so proactively and it reminded me as a parent how important it is to take the time to talk to our children about these issues.
There were some very good messages given to the children during the day and I hope this works towards supporting them in developing positive attitudes around diversity. Something that is perhaps more important in our society today than ever before.
