First Aid in Courtauld Class

On Friday mornings since September, Courtauld Class have been following the St. John Ambulance Young First Aider syllabus with Mrs. Buckland and have recently completed Parts 1 and 2, gaining information on how to treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses, including how to treat an unconscious breathing casualty and how to put them into the recovery position.

Last Friday, we were lucky enough to have a St. John Ambulance Trainer from the Chelmsford Branch come to school and take the children through Part 3 which covered further topics such as heart attacks and CPR-resuscitation using rescue breaths and chest compressions.

The children have shown great enthusiasm and commitment to this and have consequently gained a lot of knowledge and skills as well as had a lot of fun along the way – especially when honing their bandaging techniques!

The children were presented with Certificates for Parts 1 and 2 today and will shortly gain Certificates for Part 3.  We are intending to enter teams into the St. John Ambulance National Schools First Aid Competition in May again this year.  We wish them the best of luck!

All staff at St Andrew’s took the opportunity on non-pupil day (3rd January) to re- colour code our early reading books which are mainly used by Years Reception ,1 & 2.  The colour coding has been changed within the new ‘Book Bands and Bridging Bands’ scheme.  Below are the new colour bands, in order.

Colours in order: Lilac (W) Pink (W), Red (W), Yellow (1C), Blue 1C/B), Green (1B), Orange (1B/A), Turquoise (1A), Purple (2C), Gold (2B), White (2A), Lime (3),  Free Reader

These young readers have now been re-organised and coded to ‘fit’ the levels for reading from the National curriculum.  This should better support your understanding of how your child is developing in their reading and enable their class teacher to have a better feel for their overall reading level.

In addition we are purchasing additional young readers to supplement the older books that we have discarded.  Both Butler & de Vere classteachers, the main users of these books, have informed parents in more detail in their start of term newsletter.

We wish for you the spirit of Christmas which is peace,

 the gladness of Christmas

Best Wishes from all the staff at St Andrew’s
