First Aid in Courtauld Class

On Friday mornings since September, Courtauld Class have been following the St. John Ambulance Young First Aider syllabus with Mrs. Buckland and have recently completed Parts 1 and 2, gaining information on how to treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses, including how to treat an unconscious breathing casualty and how to put them into the recovery position.

Last Friday, we were lucky enough to have a St. John Ambulance Trainer from the Chelmsford Branch come to school and take the children through Part 3 which covered further topics such as heart attacks and CPR-resuscitation using rescue breaths and chest compressions.

The children have shown great enthusiasm and commitment to this and have consequently gained a lot of knowledge and skills as well as had a lot of fun along the way – especially when honing their bandaging techniques!

The children were presented with Certificates for Parts 1 and 2 today and will shortly gain Certificates for Part 3.  We are intending to enter teams into the St. John Ambulance National Schools First Aid Competition in May again this year.  We wish them the best of luck!

Constable Class enjoyed a very exciting day on Tuesday, taking part in a complete hands-on experience in television production organised by Toby Roberts (Director and Film maker).  Each child will be bringing home an edited version of their own news programme featuring reports which they wrote, directed, edited and appeared in as well as co-ordinating light and sound.  Photos of the day are in the gallery on the school website.  We were very impressed with how the day was organised and have arranged for Holst Class to have the same opportunity and experience on Tuesday, 7th February.

Information Evening

Thursday, 26th January at 7.00pm

On Thursday 26th January at 7.00pm, we plan to hold an information evening around your child’s expected progress and attainment.  This will enable you to see exactly what level your child is expected to attain in the key areas of reading, writing and mathematics at each stage of their school life ranging fromButler to Courtauld.

Children are formally assessed at every point in their career.  It starts in the early years (Butler) so there are expectations of your child even when they first start school!   It continues into De Vere class in the form of a NEW reading test for year 1 children and at the end of KS1, a test in reading, writing and mathematics for year 2 children.

The formal testing continues in Years 3, 4 and 5 which shows us who is “on track” and who may be falling behind.   Lastly, in Year 6 there are statutory SATs tests which are sent away to be externally marked.  The key areas tested are reading, writing and mathematics.  The evening has been designed to be practical and informal.  We will quickly show you examples of the tests, tell you the limited time they have to complete them and then you will spend much of the evening having a go yourself.  We hope to make the evening fun – but we think you will find it surprising too!

As you can see, there is something for everyone, no matter where your child is in the school and it will give you the chance to experience the age related expectations for each year group.  If you attend, it will give you a great opportunity to support your child to obtain the best results in their yearly SATs.

Additionally, all class teachers will be in attendance to answer your questions.  Thank you for your continued support.

The pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, which was organised by the PTA this Thursday was amazing and magical.  The school would like to thank the PTA for this special treat, which was all very much enjoyed by the children, staff and some of our PTA members.
